The Ultimate Guide: Capri & Amalfi Coast

I’ve been to Capri and Amalfi Coast three times when I was working as a tour guide in Italy and let me just say, how are you supposed to see the rest of the world when this place is an option?

It is one of the most amazing places I’ve been and I know you are going to see why it is so special once you arrive. So first things first, how do you get there?

Where to fly to?

If you are flying there the closest airport is the Naples International Airport, but many people prefer to fly into Rome, as it is cheaper.

The bus will leave from Rome Tibertina train station and bring you to Sorrento, this ride takes about 4 hours. The most popular bus route is run by Marozzi Bus.

Where should I stay?

Depending on the time of year you are going rates in Positano/Capri can be outrageous. For travelers on a budget I would suggest staying in Sorrento and making day trips to Amalfi Coast and Capri.

There are ferries that leave from the port of Sorrento, reachable by foot from Piazza Tasso in less than five minutes. The ferries take about 40 minutes and cost 15 euros one way.

Other ways to get there from Sorrento would be private water taxi or private driver. Deciding this all depends on the level of comfort you want and the budget you are working with.

What should I do when I get to Positano?

Now we are getting to the fun part!

Grab a sandwich from La Tramontina and head to the beach.

These beaches do not have sand they have rocks (ouch) so make sure you have good shoes that will keep your feet protected, I always suggest Birkenstocks they are my go-to travel shoe.

Either just take a seat on the sand (rocks) with your towel or rent lounge chairs that are in designated areas. They used to only be available to Amalfi resorts but are now open to the public as well.

On the beach there are places where you can rent canoes, paddle boards and private boat tours. I highly suggest doing a boat tour they will take you to hidden caves and places where you can cliff jump. Pick up a bottle of wine or two before going.

What about Capri?

The only way to get to Capri is via ferry. You can either leave from Sorrento or during the summer months there are ferries leaving from Positano.

Obviously, if you have done any research at all, you know about the Blue Grotto, this is something you must add to your list.

Being able to go into the Blue Grotto is weather permitting because you have to fit your very tiny boat through a very tiny hole, like very tiny. Everyone must lay flat and the wave pushes the boat through, it is terrifying but also exhilarating.

Once inside you pass from complete darkness to sparkling blue waters, lit by azure blue light. It is truly a once in a lifetime moment. Blue Grotto tours can be booked online in advance.

On the island of Capri you will experience luxury restaurants and shopping all around you.

I suggest you take the Funicular (railway on the island of Capri) up to Piazza Umberto. Sit down and get a bite to eat at Pullali Wine Bar.

After you are done eating make your way up to Anacapri. I’ve walked, taken the bus and taken a taxi and the easiest way is just getting a taxi, it won’t break the bank and you’ll get there quick.

Once you’ve gotten up there go to the Monte Solaro Chair Lift and enjoy the ultimate views of this island (see pictures below).

Once you get to the top!

Are you ready to plan your trip yet?
