The Perfect 3-Day Weekend in Amsterdam

The Perfect 3-Day Weekend in Amsterdam

I recently went on one epic girls trip to Amsterdam during the month of December and here is the full itinerary!

Day 1

Check into the Grand Hotel Amrath Amsterdam. This is a 5-star, but affordable hotel that is walking distance to many coffee places and restaurants. The hotel itself is extremely unique and if you ask the front desk they may be able to give you a private tour of the facilities.

Eat breakfast at Pancakes Amsterdam Westermarkt, which is a quick walk to the Anne Frank House.

Book tickets for the Anne Frank House.

📌 Tips:

  • Duration: Plan to spend about 1 to 1.5 hours touring the house and exhibition.
  • Tickets:
    • Book online only! Tickets are only available through the official website and are released 6 weeks in advance.
    • They also release a small batch of tickets each day at 9 AM (Amsterdam time) for same-day visits.
  • Age Recommendation: Suitable for all ages, but the subject matter can be emotional and heavy.
  • Location: Prinsengracht 263-267, located in the Jordaan neighborhood, close to the Westerkerk.
  • Best Time to Visit:
    • Early morning or late afternoon to avoid the biggest crowds.
    • Weekdays are generally less busy than weekends.
  • Accessibility:
    • The old part of the house (Secret Annex) is not wheelchair accessible due to steep stairs.
    • The modern exhibition area and museum shop are accessible.
  • No Photography: Photography is not allowed inside to respect the solemnity of the space.
  • Audio Guide:
    • Available for free and highly recommended.
    • Provides deep insight into the history of Anne Frank, her family, and those who helped them.
  • Nearby Attractions:
    • Westerkerk (right next door): Beautiful historic church with a tower offering city views.
    • Jordaan District: Perfect for wandering charming streets and canals after your visit.
  • Emotionally Intense: Be prepared for a powerful experience. The storytelling and preserved spaces are moving and thought-provoking.

Across the street from the Anne Frank House exit is the Amsterdam Tulip Museum. It’s really just a gift shop but they have such cute things if you’re looking for souvenirs. Along this same block are some places to shop or grab a bite to eat.

If you’re looking to be around locals, get a beer at Brouwerij ‘t ij.

Day 2

Book a tour at the Heiniken experience.

📌 Tips:

  • Duration: The experience takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.
  • Tickets: Book in advance! It’s a popular attraction, especially on weekends.
  • Age Requirement: Visitors must be 18+ to drink, but kids over 12 can still take the tour.
  • Location: Stadhouderskade 78, pretty close to the Museum Quarter.

At night make sure to visit a coffee shop (if you know what I mean, if not, google it). A few to try is The Bulldog Coffeeshop, Prix d’Ami, and Paradox.

Make a dinner reservation at Bellezza, an immersive dining experience and was one of the coolest things I’ve ever done while traveling. They feed you based off the senses and the food was incredible!

Day 3

Go to the Van Gogh Museum.

📌 Tips:

  • Duration: Plan to spend about 1.5 to 2 hours exploring the museum’s extensive collection.
  • Tickets: Book in advance!
  • Age Requirement: All ages are welcome, and children under 18 get free admission.
  • Location: Museumplein 6, right next to the Rijksmuseum and Vondelpark — making it easy to combine visits.
  • Best Time to Visit: To avoid crowds, go early in the morning (around 9 AM) or later in the afternoon (after 3 PM).
  • Audio Guide: Highly recommended! It adds valuable insight into Van Gogh’s life and creative process.
  • Photography: No photos allowed inside the galleries to protect the artwork and enhance the experience.
  • Accessibility: The museum is fully accessible for wheelchair users, with elevators and ramps throughout.
  • Nearby Attractions: Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk Museum, and Vondelpark are all within walking distance.

Walk around the Red Light District and get ready for your flight home!
