Bacalar: Tips For Visiting Mexico’s Hidden Gem

This quiet and undeveloped town is the perfect getaway from Cancun, Playa Del Carmen or Tulum and easily accessible via ADO bus. Bacalar is best known for the Lagoon of seven colors, and yes it really is all different shades of blue.

Laguna Bacalar is located in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico about 2.5 hours south of Tulum and right on the border of Belize.

Coming from the over crowding of Tulum to this tranquil little town really resonated with me during my trip to Mexico. Time really slows down here and you have time to truly relax.

HOW TO GET TO BACALAR

The best options are to rent a car or take the ADO bus.

A rental car can cost anything from $30-75 a day. ADO bus is about $24 round trip, booking one way tickets is your best options though so you can be flexible with when you come and go.

WHERE TO STAY IN BACALAR

If you’re looking for an inexpensive and fun option, you should stay at The Yak Lake House. I can’t say enough good things about this hostel.

I personally stayed in a private room here and it was so nice. The private room cost about $40-$50/per night. A dorm cost $8-$12/ per night.

They have events almost every night including raves on Wednesdays, Bonfires on Thursdays and many more events. Beware that music plays until about 12pm each night so bring earplugs.

Since the hostel is right on the water they offer certain tours directly from the hostel. They have a sunrise paddle boarding, cruises around the lagoon, and you can rent kayaks for an extra cost.

THINGS TO DO IN BACALAR

Definitely plan to spend a day on a boat exploring the Lagoon of Seven Colors.

I booked a booze cruise with Amir Adventures through Viator. Its about a 15 minute walk from the hostel. The boat cruise has an open bar and amazing tour guide.

Take a day to walk around the town and see the many animals, street art, and get food from Catch Bacalar which is a two minute walk from the hostel.

Get nachos and frozen margaritas, then you’ll have full access to their dock that includes swings and hammocks. You can swim and stay as long as you’d like.
